Bay Leaves Aromatic
How did these Bay Laurels get here?

I have two shrubby plants in my garden and I don't know where they came from! One is growing in an herbaceous border; it is about two foot high and, as far as I can remember, this is its fourth Summer. The other is growing in a pot, discarded at end of season 2007. First noticed it last Summer, it is now about eight or nine inches tall. Both are very aromatic, with thick, glossy leaves and research has led me to believe they are Bay Laurels, but does anyone have any ideas how they might have got there? Do birds take Laurel berries and could they have dropped any? Do Laurel berries germinate that easily, outdoors in UK? Any help would be much appreciated.

Blackbirds and thrushes both love bay berries.
More than likely a blackbird or thrush ate it and excreted it.
The berries germinate very erratically and it is possible that they may have lain dormant for a year or so before finally deciding to grow.

Mine was severely damaged by the winter this year and I had to cut out about a third of its growth as the frost had killed it. Looks sparse but still alive. I have had several babies from it turn up around the garden over the years .
